This nurse of the street was asked to do a presentation and community outreach orientation with 8 first year medical students as part of the UC Davis School of Medicine orientation of new medical students. Two MS2 students Karly Williams and Veesta Falahati coordinated this group of the Class of 2020. I understand there are over 100 students in this incoming class they were divided into groups to experience other programs and services.

This was the first time “Street Medicine-Sacramento” has used it’s new administrative office, logistics and training space to host an event. So our group was given a history of homelessness in Sacramento and current services focused to their health needs. We then traveled out into the community to get a view of the community. We divided up into smaller groups and the students engaged the homeless we came in contact with and provided them with hygiene kits they had assembled. Today’s temperature was over 104 and we were in the street at the peek of the heat.

I was approached by one of the students who had been made aware of a women lying on the ground in distress. We did a quick assessment and determined she experiencing heat stroke and we moved her to a cooler area and began to support her and keep her alert while calling for an EMS response. Sacramento City Fire/EMS responded and transported her to the ED.
