Street Medicine Sacramento provides medical care to people living and sleeping on the streets. We make rounds, respond to calls, and set up outdoor clinics. Our work restores hope and health, while reducing overall healthcare costs.
Street Medicine Sacramento
Street Medicine Sacramento provides medical care directly to those living and sleeping on the streets through mobile services such as walking teams, medical vans and outdoor clinics. Our services are the first essential step in achieving higher levels of care through assertive, coordinated and collaborative medical management.
Every night, more than 2,000 people in Sacramento County sleep on the streets, in their cars, and in homeless encampments along the rivers. Thousands more live in temporary shelters and couch surf just to have a roof over their heads. Because of medical neglect, the life expectancy of a homeless person is 30 years less than someone who is not homeless. We have a humanitarian crisis right here in the capitol of California.
Street Medicine Sacramento was founded by Tim Fallis in 2015. Tim has provided care to the homeless population for the past 30 years at work and outside of work.
We are now a program of the Health Communication Research Institute, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We are actively looking for advisors, medical navigators, and volunteers to help run our program.

What the organisation set out to do

We welcome doctors, nurses, medical students and social workers to hit the streets with us. The work is satisfying and exciting. We also need people with good organizational skills to help us run Street Medicine Sacramento.

Meet Our Organizers
Tim Fallis
Our CEO and visionary is Tim Fallis. He started Street Medicine Sacramento in 2015 simply by making rounds and reporting what he was doing on Facebook. Others then joined him. Tim is the person that the homeless population has come to know and trust. He developed our collaboration with UC Davis School of Medicine and has given several talks on homelessness and health equity. Tim has been a nurse in Sacramento since 1978.
Dr. John Lovejoy
Dr. John Lovejoy, Medical Director, practices at WellSpace Health where he is an Associate Medical Director. Realizing that many of his patients are unable to enjoy the benefits of obtaining Obamacare because of the challenges and complexities of living along our rivers in homeless communities, he decided to join our cause. He believes that healthcare in this country should be a right and not a privilege of circumstances or wealth.
Ted Fong
Ted Fong volunteers his time running Street Medicine Sacramento and doing outreach in the community. He was the Chief Operating Officer of River City Medical Group, where he managed a large network of healthcare providers that served low-income and indigent populations in Sacramento County. He was also the Chief Operating Officer at Peach Tree Health, a federally qualified health center (FQHC).

Another day on rounds
This nurse of the streets spent part of the day out on rounds on the streets and in the camps doing follow ups and wound care. Spent part of the afternoon in meetings with community groups. Then back out making house calls in one of our under served and marginalized neighborhoods.
