Street medicine provides healthcare for the homeless

This nurse of the street has been incredibly busy the past few weeks. You can see from the images attached something new is in progress…Street Medicine Sacramento!

When Street Nurse-Sacramento was established in April of last year it had several goals. The first was to “go the people” and and begin to provide health care resources and education to our homeless population. The second was to encourage other health professionals and organizations to do the same. The last goal was to work towards developing a “community based” dedicated street medicine program. We have now touched on each of those goals. We have and continue to provide health resources and health education to those in need, We have also seen the developing interest by other professionals and health organizations in reaching out to this population.

Elica Health Care is one example of that effort as they have been providing backpack medicine and mobile services and must be given credit for what they have added to a considerable community effort to improve the lives of those experiencing homelessness. But there is much work to do. So, Street Nurse-Sacramento has established “Street Medicine-Sacramento” under a 501(c)3 called Health Communications Research Institute. Both organizations are focused to solving health care inequity and improving the lives of the under served and marginalized in our community.

We now have administrative, logistic and training facilities. We have an incredible group of professionals from the community who make up our organizational team. In the coming weeks we will be adding to this team and begin to ramp up our services. So check out the new website at: www.streetmedsac.org.

Street Nurse-Sacramento will continue to post as the stories of this nurse of the street for a time as I must simply continue to share their stories and how we as a community can and must help our neighbors. Both those who have shelter and those who do not. Please share your thoughts and continue your support.
